Filing of nominations for assembly polls in TN, Puducherry & Kerala to end today

Filing of nomination papers for the forthcoming assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerela comes to an end today. The papers will be scrutinized on Monday and the last date for withdrawal is Wednesday.In Tamil Nadu, Electioneering is gathering momentum, as top leaders are on a whirl wind tour to garner votes. A total of 2401 nominations have been filed so far, the maximum of 195 in Chennai district comprising of 16 constituencies.AIR correspondent reports, the battle lines are drawn with the DMK led democratic Progressive Alliance facing AIADMK led alliance in the state. Political leaders like DMK chief Karunanidhi, AIADMK chief Jayalalitha, Deputy Chief Minister Stalin, DMDK chief Vijayakanth are on a whirl wind campaign across the length and breadth of the State.In Puducherry, the Congress has entered into an seat sharing arrangement with the PMK and VCK, even as the opposition parties are continuing negotiations on seat sharing. Hard bargaining and reconciliation are paving the way for the formation of two formidable alliance in the union territory. After allotting 10 seats to its principal ally the DMK, Congress party had to give 3 seats to the PMK and VCK. The Party, a dominant player in Puducherry politics, will be contesting in 17 seats, one more than it did in the 2006 elections.In Kerala, Congress led UDF having announced election manifesto yesterday is getting ready to reach all 140 constituencies in a big way. As of now ruling LDF is ahead of UDF and BJP has further intensified campaigning. Meanwhile, training programmes for officials on poll duty is fast progressing and electronic voting machines have arrived in the state.In Assam, the scrutiny of nominations for the second phase of elections in 64 Assembly constituencies scheduled on 11th of the next month is being held today. State Election Office sources in Guwahati said, altogether 537 candidates, including 47 women, filed their papers for this phase. The last day of withdrawal of nominations for this phase of polling is Monday. Fourteen districts spread over central and lower Assam besides the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) are to be covered in this phase. A total of 96 lakh 42 thousand 797 electorates are eligible to exercise their voting rights in this phase of elections. AIR Correspondent reports that the first phase of elections in the State will cover 62 Assembly segments on 4th April.In West Bengal, filing of nominations for the first phase of assembly polls are on. In this phase, polling for 54 seats covering six North Bengal districts will be held on 18th of next month. Altogether nine nominations were filed till yesterday. AIR Kolkata correspondent reports, campaigning is yet to pick up as the ban on use of microphones is in force till 13th of next month due to examinations. Candidates are mainly going from door to door of the voters to get their blessings.
