In Bihar, the fifth phase of Panchayat elections at 842 Gram Panchayats in 51 blocks passed off peacefully today. AIR Patna correspondent reports that no major incident of violence was so far reported from any parts of the state. In Araria, one presiding officer has been arrested on charges of irregularities in the conduct of elections. Three cane bombs were recovered from Sheohar district of the state. Over eight hundred persons were arrested as a preventive measure today. Over two lakh seventy thousand rupees were seized from the possession of arrested persons. The Panchayat elections will conclude on May 18 after the remaining five more phases. The sixth phase of elections will be held on the 6th of this month.
