FIFA World Cup: Germany and Algeria advance to Round of 16

In the Football World Cup, three time champions Germany defeated United States, 1-0 in a Group-G match last night, to advance to the Round of 16. German forward Thomas Muller scored the match's only goal, his fourth goal in this World Cup.Even with a defeat, the US progressed into the knock-out stage as they had a better goal difference than Portugal, who defeated Ghana, 2-1 in the other Group-G match. After an own goal from defender John Boye, Ghana equalised through Asamoah Gyan in the second half. Portugal's star forward Cristiano Ronaldo sealed a victory for Portugal by scoring his first goal of this World Cup. But, they failed to make it to the next round.Meanwhile, Algeria became the second team from Group-H to book a Round of 16 berth, after they drew with Russia, 1-1. They finished the group stage with 4 points. The already qualified Belgium, which defeated Korea Republic, 1-0, ended the group at the top of the table with 9 points.With these results, the group stage of this World Cup has come to an end. The Round of 16 will begin from tomorrow. Brazil will take on Chile at 9:30 PM Indian Time, while Uruguay will clash with Colombia at 1:30 AM.
