FIFA WC: Netherlands and Spain to meet in final tonight

The 2010 FIFA World Cup matches culminate at Midnight tonight with the final between European heavyweights Netherlands and Spain at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg. Netherlands lost consecutive finals to hosts West Germany and Argentina three decades ago. However, Spain are appearing in the international football showpiece climax for the first time. Spain start favourites on the back of an impressive semi-final triumph over Germany. But few would dismiss a Dutch team that came from behind to eliminate record five-time champions Brazil at the last eight stage. Both the countries have never clashed before in the tournament. Germany beat Uruguay by three goals to two in a thrilling third-place play-off match in Port Elizabeth last night. With attacks and counter-attacks, the high-scoring match saw the lead changing hands before Germany ran away the winners. Sami Khedira headed home the match-winner in the 82nd minute after a goalmouth scramble following a corner kick. The other two goal-scorers for the winners were Thomas Muller, 19th minute and Marcell Jansen, 56th minute. For Uruguay, the scorers were Edinson Cavani, 28th minute and Diego Forlan, 51st minute. The high-voltage and action-packed match ended in a fitting climax with Forlan's free-kick in the last few seconds of the three-minute injury time crashing into the German crossbar after the keeper was beaten. With the hard-fought victory, three-time champions Germany finished inside top three of the World Cup on 11 occasions in their 17 appearances. They had also finished third four years ago at home. Uruguay, who were the winners in 1930 and 1950, ended as fourth-place side for the third time in World Cup after 1954 and 1970. With a goal each in the match, Uruguay striker Forlan and German midfielder Mueller joined Dutch Wesley Sneijder and Spaniard David Villa as tournament joint top-scorers with five goals each.
