Fierce rain causes flood in China, 8 dead and 136 injured

In China, fierce rain again pounded the river basin of the Yalu River in the Northeast Liaoning Province, four days after the China-North Korea border river flooded. The provincial flood control headquarters said seventy-eight millimeters of rain fell in the border city of Dandong today. According to a report, the flood left at least eight people dead, one missing and 136 people injured. The report said a total of seven counties, 85 townships and 634 villages were reported flooded. Further, some 1,174 houses were toppled and 170,000 people were evacuated. Shipping on the Yalu River, which forms the border between China and North Korea has remained at a standstill since August 19 as the river is still at a dangerously high level. Deputy head of the flood control headquarters in Dandong City, Lu Xiusheng said the Yellow Sea's surging tide today would raise the river's level at its mouth, keeping the river swollen.
