Both the Houses of Parliament have been adjourned, the Rajya Sabha for the day, and the Lok Sabha till 2 pm, on various issues including Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in retail. Earlier, the two Houses were adjourned for an hour.
Proceedings in the Lok Sabha were again adjourned when it re-assembled following uproar by opposition members belonging to BJP, Left, AIADMK, Trinamool Congress and others on FDI issue. The DMK members were demanding discussion on 2G spectrum issue and Trinamool Congress on cooking gas cylinders. Normalcy prevailed for a brief period with the Presiding Officer P C Chacko allowing Saugata Roy of the Trinamool Congress to make a statement on his resignation from the Union Cabinet. Mr Roy said that his party had to withdraw support to the UPA government because of what he called the unilateral decision to increase the diesel prices and putting a cap on subsidized cooking gas cylinders. Pandemonium again surfaced in the House when Mr Roy made allegation that his statement was severely edited and revised by the Lok Sabha Secretariat forcing the adjournment of the House till 2 pm.
The Rajya Sabha, which was adjourned for the day, also witnessed noisy scenes after it reassembled following the first adjournment. Samajwadi Party members rushed to the well of the House shouting slogans against reservation in promotions to the SCs and STs. Some treasury bench members were also raising slogans from their seats against the reservation.
