FCI's share in procurement comes down: Parl Panel

A Parliamentary Panel said the share of Food Corporation of India, FCI in procurement has been gradually coming down both in terms of percentage and quantity. In respect of wheat it declined from nearly 53 lakh tonnes in 2008-09 to around 40 lakh tonnes and respect of paddy (in terms of rice) from over 18 lakh metric tonnes in the year 2006-07 to about 3 lakh tonnes in the year 2011-12.The Committee on Public Undertakings headed by Jagdambika Pal on Monday placed its report in Parliament. The Committee's examination of the FCI reveals that the agency has slackened its procurement activity considerably with the introduction of Decentralized Procurement Scheme in the year 1997-98.With the enactment of the Food Security Act, there is a need to augment procurement of food grains, the Committee urged FCI to play its due role effectively and expand its procurement activity, maintaining its percentage of share in procurement.
