FBI starts Gurudwara shooting probe, PM expresses shock

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has expressed deep shock over the shooting incident at a Gurudwara in the United States, in which seven persons lost their lives and 20 others were injured during Sunday morning prayers.

Talking to reporters in Parliament today, Dr. Singh said he was enormously saddened by the incident and hoped the American authorities would investigate who were behind this dastardly attack and provide relief and succour to the affected families.

Earlier in a statement, the Prime Minister said it was particularly painful that a place of religious worship had been targetted in this senseless act of violence. Offering his deepest condolences to the bereaved families, Dr. Singh said India stood in solidarity with all the peace-loving Americans, who have condemned this violence. Welcoming the US President statement on the tragic incident, the Prime Minister hoped that the authorities would reach out to the grieving families and ensure conditions that such violent acts were not repeated in the future.

The US embassy in India today said investigation had begun into the attack and it was serious about respecting and protecting people of all faiths. In a statement issued in New Delhi, the US Embassy termed the incident as tragic and said the Sikh community in the US meaningfully enhanced the American social fabric.

Indian Ambassador to US Nirupama Rao said Washington assured India that the tragic incident would be fully investigated. She said the US Deputy National Security Advisor John Brennan spoke to her from White House to convey President Barack Obama's sincerest condolences.

Soon after the incident, Obama reviewed the security situation with his top national security aides. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has promised a thorough probe into the deadliest attack at a Gurudwara in Wisconsin. FBI Milwaukee Special Agent-in-Charge Teresa Carlson said in a statement that while the FBI was investigating whether this matter might be an act of domestic terrorism, no motive had been determined into the incident so far.
