Road and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has said, faulty road engineering is one of the major component for increased road accidents in the country. <br/><br/>Releasing the publication Road Accidents in India-2016 in New Delhi today, Mr Gadkari said 789 black spots identified of which 651 on National Highway and 138 on State Roads. He said 140 National Highway spots already rectified, 283 under execution/ bidding and 228 under survey investigation. <br/><br/>The Minister said, he had asked the states also to identify all accident spots and take necessary action. He urged people to cooperate with the government to reduce number of accidents. Mr Gadkari said government is committed to reduce the number of deaths due to accidents. <br/><br/>According to released data, the Ministry said, more than one lakh 50 thousand people died in road accidents last year in the country. Numbers of person killed last year has increased by 3.2 per cent over 2015. Last year more than four lakh 80 thousand road accidents were reported and nearly five lakh persons injured. On an average 1317 accidents and 413 accident deaths take place on Indian roads every day. <br/><br/>The Ministry said, age profile of road accident victims in 2016 reveals that the youth of age group 18 to 35 years accounted for 46.3 per cent. While the working age group of 18 to 60 accounted for a share of 83.3 per cent in the total road accident fatalities. Road accidents in India is a compilation of data on various facets of road accidents as furnished by Police Departments of all States and union territories.
