In Uttar Pradesh agitated farmers demanding higher compensation for their land acquired for the Yamuna Expressway project have given a call for a state wide bandh on 25th August. It was decided in a meeting of farmers at Dharna venue at Tappal area in Aligarh.AIR Lucknow correspondent reports that agitated farmers have set up a Kisan Sangharsh Samiti to run their agitation. Samiti has claimed the bandh call has been supported by major political parties in the state including the Samajwadi Party, the Congress and the BJP. Farmer groups, including the Bharatiya Kisan Union BKU, are also supporting the agitation. The Samajwadi Party issued directions to all its district and city units for organizing demonstrations on 26th of this month at all district headquarters across the state. Meanwhile the Bharatiya Kisan Union today said it will not participate in the Rashtriya Lok Dal's call to Gherao Parliament on 26th of this month to demand replacement of land acquisition act with a new one. BKU national spokesman Rakesh Tikait has said that the call is not all-party and the Union would not participate at this stage. He, however, demanded replacement of Land Acquisition Act, 1894, to protect farmers' interest by bringing an ordinance to this effect.
