Farmers’ attempt to lay siege to Dams in Karnataka to stop Cauvery water to TN

In Karnataka, thousands of farmers attempted to lay siege to Krishna Raja Sagar and Kabini dams, demanding immediate closure of crest gates to stop the flow of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. Karnataka is releasing 9,000 cusecs of water since Sunday, in accordance with the Supreme Court directive. Defying prohibitory orders agitated farmers broke police cordon, and tried to rush towards the dams. In an attempt to jump into the Cauvery river, two farmers were injured. A few police personnel and protesters were also injured in stone pelting and the resultant baton charge.

Raitha Sangha leader Kuruburu Shanthakumar, who held a protest in Jantar Mantar in New Delhi today, informed that they will lay a siege to Raj Bhavan tomorrow in Bangalore, seeking intervention of Governor Mr. H R Bhardwaj to stop the release of water. Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar has urged farmers to maintain peace, assuring them of all possible steps to stop release of water. He informed that a review petition will be filed on Thursday in the Supreme Court, praying for a review of Cauvery River Authority directive.
