Expressing reservations over farm loan waiver schemes, State Bank of India Chairman Arundhati Bhattacharya said that such sops may disrupt credit discipline among borrowers. Bhattacharya was speaking on the sidelines of an event organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry in Mumbai on Wednesday. She said that in case of a farm loan waiver there is always a fall in credit discipline because the people who get the waiver have expectations of future waivers as well. As such future loans given often remain unpaid. Bhattacharya said though it is important to support farmers but it has to be done in a way which does not disrupt credit discipline among them.
