Family, fans bid final adieu to Bhupen Hazarika

In Assam, the mortal remains of the music maestro Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s were consigned to flames with full State Honours at the Guwahati University campus in Jalukbari this morning.

Lakhs of admirers and fans thronged the streets to bid good bye, one last time to Bhupen Hazarika who ruled their hearts since several years.

The funeral pyre was lit by his son Tez Bhupen Hazarika, amidst a 21 gun salute and chants of religious hymns by priests.

Union DoNER Minister Paban Singh Ghatowar represented Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in the funeral of the legendary singer and cultural icon.

State Governor J. B. Patnaik, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, and Opposition Leader in Lok Sabha Susma Swaraj were also among those who attended the funeral ceremony.

Dada Saheb Phalke and Padma Bushan Awardee, Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, 86, had breathed his last in a hospital in Mumbai on last Saturday.

The Government of Assam has decided to dispatch the ashes of Dr. Hazarika to the district Deputy Commissioners to perform religious rite in holy waters of their respective areas.

The Government has also planned to set up a “Bhupendra Bhavan” at the cremation site.

The Bhupendra Bhavan will house an auditorium, archive centre, museum and research centre.
