Face book temporarily blocked in Bangladesh

The social networking site Face book has been temporarily blocked in Bangladesh. The users of facebook have not been able to log onto the site since last night, however there has been no official confirmation on the reason for the site being blocked. The local media agencies quoting sources from the Bangladesh telecom regulatory commission claimed the site was blocked following government directives. Earlier on Saturday afternoon, the Rapid Action Battalaion announced that they have arrested a cyber criminal for posting obscene information of political leaders and higher officials of government on face book. Mahbub Alam Rodin, 30, a resident of Wari in the capital was arrested on charges of uploading satiric images of some political leaders on his Facebook accounts. According to RAB officials, Rodin had opened several facebook accounts using fake email addresses and was using them to upload obscene pictures. Several Islamic organisations have been holding protest marches demanding a ban on the social networking site Face Book in Bangladesh following reports of objectionable material regarding Prophet Mohammed being posted on the site.
