External Affairs minister SM Krishna reaches Colombo

External Affairs minister SM Krishna has reached Colombo on a four day visit to Sri Lanka. He was received at the airport by his Sri Lankan counterpart G L Peires.

This is his second visit to the island nation in the last 14 months. Political solution to the ethnic question, the issue of reconciliation and the review and progress of the India assisted 50,000 housing project for the war displaced Tamil civilians are likely to be the focus of the visit.

Mr. Krishna will hold discussions with the leaders of the various Tamil parties including representatives of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), to elicit their views on the progress in their talks with Colombo over the proposed devolution of powers.

He will also meet the leaders of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC). Before that, the External Affairs Minister is likely to participate in the Thai Pongal celebrations being hosted by the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa at his official residence.

Mr Krishna will also meet the leader of the opposition Ranil Wickremesinghe.

External Affairs Minister is scheduled to have a breakfast meeting with the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa Tuesday morning.

Later, he will call on the Sri Lankan Prime Minister DM Jayaratne. Mr Krishna is also scheduled to visit the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) Memorial in Colombo tomorrow and pay homage to the soldiers who laid their lives between 1987-1990 during the peace keeping operations in Sri Lanka.

During the course of his visit, External affairs Minister will visit Kilinochchi and Jaffna in the Northern Province, and Galle in the South to oversee a host of programmes which are being executed with the Indian assistance.
