Exploitation of deprived sections of society through forced labour not to be tolerated: Bandaru Dattatreya

Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya has said, exploitation of deprived sections of society through forced labour will not be tolerated and the perpetrators will be punished. Mr Dattatreya said this while presiding over a National Seminar on Bonded Labour in Delhi today. He said, a Wages Code combining the existing major labour laws is being prepared and efforts were on to fix national floor wage in consultation with the stakeholders.<br/><br/>Secretary General of the National Human Rights Commission(NHRC), Dr SN Mohanty called for intensive survey on all the facets of bonded labour for effective implementation of laws. NHRC Chairman Justice HL Dattu said, Bonded Labour is anathema to the notion of civil society and the commission has disposed more than ninety percent of registered cases.<br/><br/>The two-day seminar is being attended by state human rights commissions and international organizations – United Nation Development Programme, International Labour Organisation and many NGOs. The seminar will revisit and review the Bonded labour system (Abolition) Act.
