Expert team probing BARC fire mishap: AEC Chairman

The Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Mr Sreekumar Banerjee has said that an expert team is probing the cause of the fire mishap at the Bhabha Atomic Research centre in Mumbai recently which killed two researchers. Speaking to newsmen in Chennai on Monday, he said all possibilities including electrical short circuit are being examined to identity the scientific reason behind the mishap. <br/><br/>On the Koodankulam project in Tamil Nadu, he said two more reactors will be coming up at the site. Replying to a question he said of the two nuclear reactors under construction, one unit will become critical by the middle of this year. Earlier, Inaugurating the 20th annual conference of the Indian Nuclear Society, the former chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission Mr Anil Kakodkar underscored the importance of strengthening linkages between research activity and delivery systems to ensure that nuclear power projects are on track . <br/><br/>He said, to meet the growing demand for energy in the country, there is a need to scale up the generation of nuclear power through multi projects. Mr Kakodkar said the government has recently approved new sites for establishing nuclear power plants.
