Excise duty on jewellery an assassination attempt on small traders: Rahul Gandhi

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi today alleged that the budgetary proposal to impose 1 per cent excise duty on non-silver jewellery is an assassination attempt on small traders and workers. Addressing the jewellers' rally at Mumbai's Zaveri Bazaar, Mr. Gandhi said it is the government's job to balance things in the country. Alleging oppression of seven crore workers engaged in this trade, Mr. Gandhi said Congress will raise this issue in Parliament.<br/><br/> Earlier this morning, Mr. Gandhi visited Deonar Dumping Ground where recent fires have caused a serious health and environmental hazard. Taking potshots over the 'Swachh India Abhiyan', Mr. Gandhi said that mere slogans devoid of clear strategy and action plan would not make any difference and keep the country clean. Demanding that the garbage ground be shut, Mr. Gandhi said Mumbai is a symbol of progress and there should be a clear strategy on how to make people free from this menace. Mr. Gandhi also visited the city's most revered and famous Mumba Devi Temple.
