The funeral rites of former Prime Minister of Nepal Krishna Prasad Bhattarai have been performed with full state honor at Aryaghat, Pashpinath temple at Kathmandu this evening. His nephew Pramod Bhattarai lighted the funeral pyre after Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal and Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala paid last tributes on behalf of the state and the party respectively.Thousands of people thronged the cremation site to bid farewell, to the founder member of the Nepali Congress and a two-time prime minister. He died at the age of 87 in Kathmandu on Friday night.The funeral procession which stated from Dashrath Stadium took more than two hours to reach the cremation site .The body had been kept at the stadium for the public to pay their homage to the departed leader. Thousands of people including dignitaries took part in the procession which was escorted by the personnel of Nepal Army and Nepal Police. National Congress President Sushil Koirala and senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba were also in the same vehicle carrying Bhattarai's body.Nepal government is observing a three-day state mourning with a public holiday today to mourn his death. The national flag will fly half-mast at government offices across the country and Nepali diplomatic missions abroad with effect from today.Bhattari was a founder member of the Nepali Congress who had served as twice as s Prime Minister. Popularly known as Kishunji he was an epitome of integrity who served as Prime Minister in 1990-1991 and May 1999-March 2000. Bhattari's first term as prime minister of the Interim Cabinet from April 1990 to May 1991 is credited for promulgating the Interim Constitution of 1990. He was forced to resign due to internal fissure in Nepali Congress while he was serving a second term from May 1999-March 2000.
