EVMs used for 1st time in B'desh

In Bangladesh, electronic voting machines were used for the first time today in the Chittagong City Corporation polls. <br/><br/>The Bangladesh election commission had made arrangements for voters to cast their vote through evm’s in the Jamal Khan ward of the Chittagong City Corporation. Arrangements had been made for a total of 25,315 voters of Jamalkhan ward to cast their votes in 79 polling booths of 14 polling centres through EVM machines. <br/><br/>The Bangladesh Election Commission had decided to introduce EVM’s on a trial basis with the technical support of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. Polling in the remaining part of the city took place with the use of paper ballot and it has passed off peacefully amidst tight security arrangements to elect the city mayor, 41 councillors and 14 others in seats reserved for women. <br/><br/>All eyes are on the Mayor’s contest with the Awami League-backed mayoral candidate ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury hoping to win a fourth successive term by defeating BNP-backed Mohammad Manjur Alam. Counting of votes has begun and Mohiuudin Chowdhury has reportedly taken an early lead.
