The UPA Chairperson Mrs Sonia Gandhi has said that everyone should have access to quality education and it should not become the right of few people. She hoped that the Right to Education Act will help in meeting this challenge. Expressing concern that many children drop out of schools and one-fourth of the teachers are absent in rural areas. Mrs. Sonia Gandhi stressed the need to raise the standard of all government schools at par with the Jawahar Navodaya Vidalayas which she said, are comparable with the best of schools in the country. She was speaking after inaugurating 31 new buildings of Jawahar Navodaya Vidalayas at a function in New Delhi today. In his speech, the Human Resources Development Minister Mr. Kapil Sibal said that a decision has been taken for the JNV's to have the facility to impart vocational skills. Speaking about the dream of the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi to provide quality education to all children, Mr. Sibal regretted that even today all the children do not have access to quality education.AIR correspondent says that more than two lakh children are studying in 593 JNVs. The JNVs which are celebrating the Silver Jubilee were established to provide good quality, modern education and they are residential schools primarily for rural areas and only one- fourth of the admission is for children in urban areas. The annual income of parents of 74 per cent of the children in JNVs is 48 hundred rupees or less than that, 71 per cent belong to rural areas and 41 per cent to the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes.
