Every Puducherry resident to have UID by Jan 2012

Puducherry would become the first state in the country where every citizen would have an Unique identity number or UID by Jan 2012. AIR correspondent reports that the ambitious Aadhar project was launched on a pilot basis lastJanuary and now enrollment for the UID is on across the Union Territory at a hectic pace. 70 per cent of the 9.5 lakh populations have been covered so far. In another first of its kind the enrolment for the Aadhar is being done in partnership with the Department of Civil supplies and consumer affairs. The Director of the department Mrs. Priyadarshini said that the rolling out of Aadhar and the biometric smart card to replace ration card will herald a new chapter in the efforts of the government in enabling inclusive growth and bringing in greater efficiency and transparency in governance. The implementation of the UID and smart card scheme would prevent leakage in implementation of government welfare schemes. A welcome initiative which would ensure that these schemes reach target groups.
