Petrol price may rise in big cities from the first of next month with Euro-IV launch. Talking at the launch function in New Delhi today, Oil Secretary S Sundareshan said that Petrol price in cities like Delhi and Mumbai may go up by 41 paise per litre and diesel by 26 paise a litre from April one, when cleaner Euro-IV grade auto fuel will replace the existing grade in 13 big cities. Mr. Sundareshan said that Oil firms will sell ultra-low sulphur petrol and diesel in 13 major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad from April one, while Euro-III grade fuel will be supplied in the rest of the country.Speaking on the occasion, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Murli Deora said that the citizens of Delhi and the NCR will be able to use environment friendly transportation fuels of international standards. He said Delhi was one of the world's 10 most polluted cities, with vehicles contributing about 65 percent of the polluting emissions. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has termed the introduction of cleaner Euro-IV fuel as a historic event and a step towards making the capital a world class city. On the criticism following withdrawal of subsidy on cooking gas and increase in VAT on CNG and diesel, she saidthe government cannot give subsidy to everybody. She said there are some people who can afford not to be subsidised as they are earning more due to the economic boom.
