Eunuchs, transsexuals can now vote in elections in India: EC

Eunuchs and transsexuals can now vote in elections in India with an independent identity. They don't have to describe them as male or female to become eligible for voting any more.

The far reaching decision was taken by the Election Commission following representations from various sections of the society. The commission said they will now be put in the column of 'Other' in the electoral rolls, if they do not want to be described as male or female.

Earlier only 2 columns were given to indicate whether a voter is a male or female. If they do not indicate their gender they cannot cast vote. Now the third option of other category will figure in all Forms used by the EC, including IT based formats and website.

This has been their longstanding demand and many could not figure in the electoral rolls because of this impediment.
