The European Commissioner for Monetary Affairs, Olli Rehn, has tried to reassure the global financial markets after a week of turbulence. Rehn dismissed as unjustified recent fears about the stability of some Eurozone economies. He said neither Italy nor Spain needed a bail out. Earlier, there were further falls on stock exchanges across Asia and Europe. But latest unemployment figures from the United States showed an improvement.
