The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) for upcoming parliament and provincial elections in Nepal was officially launched at Kathmandu yesterday. At a press conference, Chief Observer and a member of the European Parliament from Croatia, Zeljana Zovko said that it is a great privilege to have been given this opportunity to lead the mission. <br/><br/>Zovko said that elections scheduled on November 26 and December 7 mark an important stage in Nepal's democratic development and she hope that EU observers presence will contribute to an inclusive and transparent electoral process. <br/><br/>Zovko explained that the mandate of EU EOM is to observe all aspects of the electoral process and to assess the extent to which the elections are in compliance with the law of Nepal, as well as with international and regional commitments for democratic elections to which Nepal is a signatory. <br/><br/>Around 100 election observers are being deployed in both rounds of the elections.The members of European Parliament and diplomats from missions of European Union countries in Nepal will be also part of EU EOM. Shortly after the completion of House of Representatives and Provincial Assemblies' elections, the mission will issue a preliminary report of its findings. The European Union had also deployed Election Observation Missions in 2008 and 2013 constituent assembly elections in Nepal.
