EU bans Iran Air's jets from flying to Europe

The European Union today banned most of Iran Air's jets from flying to Europe due to safety concerns. Iran Air's Boeing 720s and 747s, along with its Airbus 320s, were placed on the EU blacklist following safety audit, Transport Commission spokesperson Helen Kearns said. However, Kearns denied the move had anything to do with US sanctions against Iran. Iran Air has had trouble maintaining its ageing Boeing 747 and 727 jets due to a 30-year-old US ban on spare parts. The 27-nation bloc also relaxed restrictions on two airlines from Indonesia and put a Surinam airline on its blacklist of carriers that do not meet international safety standards.
