Environmental fees for tourists to keep Ladakh clean

Tourists and non residents of Jammu and Kashmir visiting Ladakh will have to pay environmental fees to maintain world Famous tourists spot Ladakh clean. The environmental fee is being charged since May this year as per the policy decision of local government Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh. The council had taken this decision to preserve local ecology and to create facilities at the tourist spots of the district.Our correspondent reports that as environmental fees, the tourism department is charging two hundred rupees from domestic tourists and other citizens of the country who are visiting Ladakh for non official purposes and three hundred rupees from foreign tourists. It was started from May 5 this year. It is the second attempt of Local government LAHDC because when it was started in 2004, it could not sustain due to poor support of stakeholders of tourism sector. The revenue generated from the environmental fees will be utilized in conservation of local ecology and to keep Ladakh clean.
