Environmental clearance to Neutrino observatory project suspended

The southern bench of the National Green Tribunal has kept in abeyance the environmental clearance granted to the Neutrino observatory project sighting the facts such as the presence of a national park and interstate border in the vicinity. Though Environment impact assessment notification specifies that if there was any interstate boundary or a national park within five km radius of the project site, the site has to be categorised under A category project, the points were never brought before the NGT so far.

It was brought to the notice of the NGT bench yesterday that a national park is located within 4.5 km radius of the subject state. Madhikettan Shola National park is in Kerala and the inter state border within 1 km of the site.
An NGT member Justice P.Jothimani and member P.S.Rao said the Union Ministry of environment, forests and climate change clearance must be kept in abeyance till officials ask for a fresh clearance with the new facts. Institute of Mathematical sciences Physicist D.Indumathi said the INO team would discuss and plan their next move. She said that they would follow the procedures required for environmental clearance, but finding an alternative location for the project outside Tamilnadu had so far not been considered.
