Environmental clearance must for construction of big dams for hydro projects

Government says that environmental clearance for construction of big dams for hydro electric projects will be given only if they don't have adverse impact on the ecology and environment. Responding to the clarifications sought by the members on a calling attention motion by Birendra Prasad Baishya of AGP in the Rajya Sabha the Environment and Forest Minister Mr. Jairam Ramesh gave an assurance to this effect to the House. He said it is a challenge to tap hydro power from Arunachal Pradesh, which has a vast potential. Mr. Ramesh asserted that all care and caution will be taken while setting up hydro power plants in that state so that its ecology and environment are not disturbed.Mr. Ramesh said his ministry had undertaken two Basin Studies from Lohit and Bichom Basin in Arunachal for the future power projects instead of project by project approach to environmental impact assessment. He said similar studies for Subanisiri and Siang Basin will be undertaken. Sharing the concern of the members on the impact of big dams on environment in the north eastern states, the minister assured the members that a balance will be preserved and all decisions will be taken in a transparent and consultative manner.
