Environment ministry issues show cause notice to Adarsh Housing society on violation of green norms

The Ministry of Environment and Forest has issued a show cause notice to the Adarsh Housing Society in Mumbai asking it why the Society building in Colaba should not be demolished entirely for violating green norms. The Society has been asked to reply within 15 days. The notice says that in case there is no response within the time frame, final directions may be passed without any further reference. The Environment Ministry said that in case M/s. Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society wants to be heard in person, it should very clearly indicate about this in their reply and the hearing will be done within a week after receiving the response. The show cause notice came after the National Coastal Zone Management Authority recommended that the unauthorised structure of society needed to be removed from the Coastal Regulation Zone under the provisions of an existing Act of 1986. The Authority met in New Delhi on Friday to consider the recommendations of Maharashtra Coastal Management Authorities in view of the sensitivity and the urgency of the case. Earlier, the Ministry of Environment and Forest was informed by the Secretary of Environment of Maharashtra Government on the 27th of last month that the Adarsh Housing Society had not been granted a coastal regulation zone clearance.
