Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav calls for peoples contribution in protecting river ecosystem

Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav has called for peoples contribution in protecting the river ecosystem in the country. He said, in its efforts the government aims at enhancing the degraded forest area near the rivers. He was speaking at a function in New Delhi today to mark the release of detailed project reports, DPRs, for rejuvenation of 13 major Indian rivers through forest intervention. He said the projects will alleviate the growing water stress and help achieve national goals related to climate change and sustainable development.<br />''       <br />''The Minister said, unless the government links the local language with the people of the area, the river protection will not become a mass movement, therefore public participation is must in this cause. He said, the government is fully committed to provide international level research knowledge to those involved in traditional biodiversity research.<br />''<br />''AIR Correspondent reports that the government has proposed a cumulative budget outlay of thirteen project reports is over 19 thousand crore rupees.  These project reports on rejuvenation of Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, Sutlej, Yamuna, Brahmaputra, Luni, Narmada, Godavari, Mahanadi, Krishna and Cauvery rivers focus on protection, afforestation, catchment treatment, ecological restoration, moisture conservation, livelihood improvement, income generation, ecotourism by developing river fronts, eco-parks and bringing awareness amongst the masses. <br />''<br />''Research and monitoring have also been included as a component.<br />''Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Union Minister Ashwani Kumar Choubey were present at the event. <br />
