Environment Min calls for substantive action at local level for air quality management

Environment Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan has called for substantive action at the local level along with a holistic action plan for air quality management. He said this while addressing the Conference of Chairmen and Member Secretaries of Pollution Control Boards and Committees in New Delhi on Tuesday. Dr Vardhan stressed on the need to address the gaps in the disposal of Solid Waste Management,as 50 per cent of the waste collected is dumped unscientifically.He also said, 2.59 lakh tonnes of plastic waste is generated every day but only 14 States have banned plastic carry-bag. Saying that five States-Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Goa, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab have completed E-waste inventorization, the Minister urged the remaining States to complete the process at the earliest.Dr. Vardhan stressed on the need for embedding Information Technology into pollution control regime to enhance transparency and efficiency to contain and mitigate pollution. He said people must be educated and motivated about the actions that they can take individually to bring about a quantitative and qualitative change on environmental issues. <br/><br/>
