Entire north India shivers under intense cold wave conditions

Intense cold wave continued to sweep North India with the national capital witnessing the coldest day of the season. Maximum temperature in Delhi plummeted to 11 degrees Celsius on Sunday, which was ten degrees below normal for this period of time. The night temperature marginally improved to five degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal. Dense fog disrupted rail and air services in the national capital region. Dense fog hit flight operations at the IGI airport as schedule of over 40 domestic and international flights were affected. 70 trains were also delayed and nine cancelled during the day.Intense cold claimed 13 lives in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday. Agra recorded the lowest temperature in the state at 0.6 degrees Celsius, which was six notches below normal. The state capital Lucknow recorded a minimum of 3.4 deg C, four degrees below normal, whereas Varanasi registered a low of 5 deg C, three notches below normal.Leh and Kargil districts in Ladakh were the coldest places in Jammu and Kashmir, with both registering a minimum of minus 13.0 degrees Celsius. Srinagar witnessed a slight increase with the minimum temperature settling at minus 0.1 deg C. Pahalgam was the coldest place in the Kashmir Valley, recording a low of minus 9.0 deg C, while Gulmarg recorded a minimum of minus 7.7 deg C. High altitude areas in the Valley have received light snowfall over the past two days, much to the delight of winter sports lovers. ‘Mercury dropped by a few notches in mid and lower hills in Himachal Pradesh as icy winds swept the region, affecting normal life. Shimla, recorded a low of 1.0 deg C, two degree below normal. Water pipes were frozen in many areas disrupting its supply in the city. People had to heat up the pipelines to get water. Solan shivered as the minimum temperature dipped to minus 1.2 deg C. The minimum temperature dropped to minus 12 deg C at Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti district.A thick blanket of fog engulfed several parts of Punjab and Haryana, affecting air, road and rail traffic due to low visibility. Amritsar was the coldest place in the two states with a minimum temperature of 2.2 deg C, while Narnaul in Haryana braved a low of 3 deg C. The minimum temperature at Chandigarh was 3.6 deg C.Cold conditions continue to persist in Rajasthan with Mount Abu recording a minimum temperature of minus one degree C, while Bikaner shivered at 1.4 degrees Celsius. Jaipur recorded a minimum of 2.3 deg C.
