Entire country united to provide security & safety to people of NE : PM

The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh today again assured the people of Northeast that entire country is united to provide security and safety to them. Intervening in the debate in the Lok Sabha, Dr. Manmohan Singh asserted that people of the north-eastern region have every right to study and live anywhere in the country.

Dr. Singh warned that the unity and integrity of the country is being threatened by anti-social elements. He urged the members of the House to rise above party lines to send a clear message to remove the feeling of insecurity among the people of the north-eastern region. Dr. Singh made a similar statement in the Rajya Sabha after the two Houses took up the debate on the issue suspending question hour.
Participating in the debate, members cutting across party-lines urged the government to enquire into the root cause of the problem which they described as a conspiracy to destablise the country.

In the Lok Sabha, the Leader of Opposition Mrs Sushma Swaraj said the, the North Eastern Region has vital security significance and if the situation is not brought under control, the credibility of the government will be compromised.

Mr Ninong Ering of the Congress from Arunachal Prasad, said the incidents have created fear psychosis among the North East students and anti-social elements are exploiting the situation.
In the Rajya Sabha, Senior BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu, said the texting of the SMS has created fear among the people of North East living in various parts of the country.

He said it is the duty of the Central government to find out the truth behind the clear-cut mischief to create panic among the people. He suggested that the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh should also make an appeal to the North Eastern people not to panic. Echoing similar views Senior Congress leader Dr Karan Singh said every state government has the responsibility to ensure law and order situation.

Senior Assom Gana Parishad (AGP) Birendra Prasad Baishya said it is the time to work together to maintain peace and harmony in the country. He suggested that a resolution be adopted by the House assuring the North East people that the whole country is with them. Mr Balgopal of CPIM and Prof. Ram Gopal Yadav of the Samajwadi Party also spoke.The discussion was continuing when reports last came in.
