Enough stock of food to meet PDS requirement: Pawar

The Government today assured the Lok Sabha that there is enough stock of food grain to meet the requirement of Public Distribution System and other welfare programmes. Replying to supplementaries in the House today, the Food and Agriculture Minister Mr. Sharad Pawar said that government is worried that the population outside the purview of Public Distribution System may feel the heat of rising food inflation. He gave details of the steps taken by the government to increase productivity and increase production.<br/><br/>Replying another question, he said only the land which has the approval of seventy per cent of farmers, will be acquired for any project. The land which gives two crops a year will not be taken at all. Dispelling the doubts of the members, the Government has approved a total assistance of 4,100 crore rupees for the farmers whose crops have been damaged to the scant monsoon. Mr. Pawar said, about 2000 crore rupees have already been released to the states under national calamity contingency fund and Calamity Relief Fund. Mr. Pawar gave the details of the impact of scant monsoon rain on the production pattern and assured the House that all measures are being taken to enhance the production in the Rabi season.
