England secure dramatic 14-run win over Sri Lanka

In Cricket, hosts England pulled off a dramatic 14-run victory against Sri Lanka in the first test match, played at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. A draw seemed on the cards as England declared at 496-5 on the fifth and final day yesterday, with a lead of 96 runs in the first innings. But it was the English bowling in the final session of the match which stole the show. Seamer Chris Tremlett and Spinner Graeme Swann ripped through the Sri Lankan batting order in the post tea session as the tourists bundled up for just 82, thereby losing the match by an innings and 14 runs. Sri Lanka lost 8 wickets for 49 runs. Both, Tremlett and Swann bagged 4 wickets. Englishman Jonathan Trott was adjudged man of the match for his entertaining 203 which helped England cross the massive Sri Lankan first innings total of 400. Ian Bell and Alistair Cook were the other centurians from England. The second test of the three match test series will be played at Lord's from 3rd of June.
