India lost the wickets of captain Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane in the pre-lunch session and the rest in the session before tea. Rahane and Kohli departed in the span of under 15 minutes. Kohli became the first Indian skipper in over 65 years to be dismissed hit-wicket. Rashid took 4 wickets while Ali and Ansari bagged 2 wickets each. The other two wickets were shared equally by pacers Stuart Broad and Ben Stokes. Earlier, England had amassed 537 in their first innings on back of Joe Root, Moeen Ali and Ben Stokes' century. This is the first of the 5 Test matches to be played.
