England defeated India by 9 runs in the first one day international cricket match at Rajkot yesterday, to lead the 5-match series, one nil. Opting to bat first, England compiled a formidable 325 for 4 in the stipulated 50 overs.Ian Bell top scored for the visitors with a brilliant 85, while Skipper Alistair Cook made 75. For India, Pacer Ashok Dinda bagged two wickets.In reply, India managed to make 316 for 9 in 50 overs, even though most the Indian batsmen showed real intent. Yuvraj Singh made 61, while Suresh Raina and Gautam Gambhir also made half centuries. Spinner James Tredwell, who scapled 4 wickets, was adjudged man of the match.The second ODI will be played at Kochi on Tuesday.
