England defeated India by 196 runs in the first test match of the four-match cricket test series at Lords in London last night. With this England has won their 100th test against India. The hosts produced a disciplined and determined bowling display at Lord's Monday night to dismiss the world's most talented batting lineup for the second time.Chasing a target of 458 runs, India was all out for 261 in their second innings. Earlier in their first innings, England made 474 for eight and declared. In reply, the visitors could make only 286. In their 2nd inning, the hosts declared at 269 for six, thereby setting a target of 458 runs before India to win the match. James Anderson was the home side's hero on the final day of the first test with five for 65. He took the wickets of Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar. For India, Dravid made 36 runs while Sachin tendulkar was out at 12. Laxman could score 56 runs. Gautam Gambhir too was out leg before wicket to Graeme Swann. Captain Andrew Strauss preferred to praise the overall contribution of Anderson, Chris Tremlett, Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann rather than dwell on individuals. The teams have only three days off before the second test begins at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Friday. The third is scheduled for Edgbaston and the series concludes at the Oval.
