In UP, the death toll due to various forms of encephalitis in the eastern region this year has mounted to 533. Five Children have died in past two days. AIR Gorakhpur correspondent quoting official sources reports that 214 encephalitis patients are still being treated in these hospitals. The hospital wards are full of encephalitis patients even after the onset of winter. Normally, the level of infection reduces during winter. Specialists say that the unhygienic condition and increased density of mosquitoes in rural areas has compounded the problem. The disease is caused by the mosquito bite and use of contaminated water. Meanwhile the Union Minister for Rural Development Jairam Ramesh has announced that a joint working group comprising several union ministries will soon visit Gorakhpur to chalk out an action plan to combat the disease.
