Employers can pay salaries through cheques & cash: Dattatreya

Union Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya today said, employers can pay salaries to the employees through cheques, bank accounts and cash. <br/><br/>Briefing media in New Delhi, Mr Dattatreya clarified that media reports that the Ministry is bringing an amendment to Payment of Wages Act to make mandatory payment of wages to the workers only through cheque or accounts transfers are untrue. <br/><br/>The government proposes to bring an amendment to Section 6 of the Act which will further provide crediting the wages in the bank account of the employees or payment through cheque along with the existing provisions of payment in current coin or currency notes. This is being done to facilitate the employers from making payment of wages using the banking facilities also in addition to the existing modes of payment of wages. On a query, Mr Dattatreya said, new bank accounts for workers have been opened in view of demonetisation. More than 30 lakh new accounts have been opened since 22nd of November last month. <br/><br/>Talking about the organization restructuring of the EPFO, Mr Dattatreya said promotion of approximately 20 thousand staff and officers will be carried out after long stagnation across all cadres. He said, this will motivate the staff for discharging efficient services to the stakeholders. He also said, an expenditure of 48 crore per annum will be met from internal surplus of the EPFO.
