The failure of three electricity grids connecting more than 27 states and the National Capital, collapsed today, triggering major power crisis. The collapse left more than half of the country powerless. Essential services and public transport systems including Railways and Delhi Metro were also hit.
Power Minister Sushil kumar Shinde blamed that overdrawal of power by certain states is responsible for the current crisis. He told reporters in New Delhi today that government is working to bring back normalcy and expressed hope that the power supply will restored shortly.
It is probably for first time that the three grids collapsed simultaneously. Northern Grid failed for the second consecutive day today while Eastern and North Eastern Grids also collapsed this morning.
Power Secretary P Uma Shankar said that all essential loads have been brought back, some of them have been restored.
300 trains came to a halt at various places this afternoon due to failure of both the Northern and the Eastern grids. The busy Delhi-Howrah route remained almost paralysed.
Delhi Metro Service was also affected. However, the flight operations at the Delhi International Airport remained unaffected today.
