Election of Speaker of newly constituted Puducherry Assembly to be held on Wednesday

The Election of the Speaker of the newly constituted Puducherry Assembly will be held on Wednesday. The Assembly Secretary Mr. M. Sivaprakasam said in a press release that necessary notice on filing of nomination has been sent to all the members of the assembly individually. The Ruling All India NR congress led by Chief Minister Mr N.Rangaswamy has 14 members in the 30 member assembly, though it had won in 15 seats. Mr. Rangaswamy had contested in two constituencies winning both and has since resigned in one.AIR correspondent reports that the election of the Speaker assumes significance as the Ruling NR congress is individually short of majority and is relying on the support of one independent to get its nominee elected. The Congress, the DMK and the Aiadmk which has a combined strength of 14 members have been demanding that Rangaswamy led government prove its majority in the house.
