Election Commission wants paper trail for EVMs

The Election Commission has asked the two public sector units manufacturing EVMs to consider the possibility of introducing paper trail in voting machines used in the elections. The issue was discussed at a meeting of the Election Commission's Technical Expert Committee, headed by P V Indiresan, former Director of IIT, Madras. According to an official release, the Committee asked the two public sector units, Bharat Electronics Limited and Electronics Corporation of India Limited to provide a detailed roadmap soon for further consideration. The Commission last year had referred the issue to the Committee after the suggestion for a voter verifiable paper trail in EVMs to enhance the confidence of voters emerged at a meeting of political parties.
