Elders brand Gaza restrictions an obstacle to peace

A delegation of the Elders group of retired world figures have visited the Gaza Strip and called Israeli restrictions on the Palestinian enclave both illegal and an obstacle to peace.After spending the day in the enclave yesterday, the group which include Mary Robinson, Ela Bhatt and Lakhdar Brahimi in a statement said, Gaza issue is not a humanitarian crisis but it is a political crisis, which can be solved politically. They called isolation of Gaza illegal and an impediment to peace. During the visit, the three met local leaders, rights activists, business people, women’s organisations, UN officials and the Gaza authorities.Robinson is Ireland's former president and UN high commissioner for human rights, Ila Bhatt is prominent Indian women's rights campaigner, and Brahimi is former Algerian foreign minister and UN envoy.
