Eight US soldiers killed in east Afghan battle

In Afghanistan, US-led forces claimed to have killed more than 100 militants in the Saturday fighting which also resulted in deaths of eight American and two Afghan solders in eastern province of Nuristan. A press statement issued this evening said that a more detailed battlefield assessment following the Oct. 3 attack has determined that enemy forces suffered more than 100 dead during the well-coordinated defense, significantly higher losses than originally thought. It said ISAF now believes that the attack was conducted by local anti-Afghan forces, while local Taliban and elements of Hezb-e Islami Gulbuddin may have helped facilitate the attack. The casualty among the US soldiers was one of the highest which occurred at a remote outpost bordering Pakistan. Among other incident, ten Afghan soldiers were killed in a Taliban ambush in southern province of Helmand while more than 100 Taliban militants were killed and wounded elsewhere in the country.
