In Indonesia, at least eight people were missing and thousands had to be evacuated after flash floods blamed on illegal logging in Aceh province. Officials today said water surged through villages last night after around eight hours of heavy rains had battered the area. A district official of Pidie said the floods wrecked more than a hundred houses across nine villages in the district. The official said the number of missing or dead could rise as one village had been completely cut off by the waters. He said the floods occurred because of illegal logging activity surrounding this area. Last year, flash floods in the remote area of Papua killed at least 148 people.
