More than eight lakh people have been affected due to flood and heavy rains in the Eastern and Central Provinces of Sri Lanka. The inclement weather condition and heavy rains prevailing in the region for almost two weeks have left 4685 families relocated in various shelter camps in Batticaloa, Ampara and Polonnaruwa Districts. 18 camps located in these districts are providing relief supplies to those affected by floods and rain. More than 669 houses have been fully damaged and 2631 are partially damaged due to floods. Three deaths and seven personal injuries were also reported till Saturday.Meanwhile Sri Lanka Air Force has deployed Bell 212 helicopters to rescue those who are caught in the floods in Batticaloa and Ampara. They have so far rescued 24 persons from Batticaloa yesterday evening owing to the flood situation prevailing in the area. Speaking to AIR/DD, Air Force Spokesperson Group Captain Janaka Nanyakkara said that the services of the Air Force is also being used to air drop dry rations for distribution in various camps.Sri Lankan Army and the Navy have also been pressed into action for various flood relief operations .The latest report said that the schools in the Eastern Province have been ordered to close down in the region .Sri Lanka meteorological department has warned that inclement weather with heavy rains and strong winds will prevail in several provinces in the country for the next 48 hours.
