In Afghanistan, eight foreign soldiers and one civilian contractor were killed on Wednesday when an Afghan army officer opened fire at the military airport in the capital Kabul. Two Afghan army soldiers were also injured in the incident. Afghan Defence Ministry spokesman, Gen. Mohammad Zahir Azimi said the gunman, an Afghan military pilot, was also killed in the shooting. He said an argument happened between him and the foreigners leading to the shootout. President Hamid Karzai condemned the incident and instructed the Defence Minister to launch an investigation and identify the perpetrators. Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid took responsibility for the attack in a statement sent to the media. He claimed the shooter was a sleeper agent who used an Afghan army uniform and gained access to the military airport but Defence Ministry denied that it was a terrorist incident. Recent weeks have seen a wave of attacks by militants dressed in Afghan military uniforms, including several suicide bombings. On April 18, an insurgent dressed in Afghan army uniform opened fire inside the Afghan Defence Ministry in central Kabul, killing two employees and wounding seven. Since March 2009, the NATO-led coalition has recorded 20 incidents where a member of the Afghan security forces or someone wearing a uniform attacked coalition forces, killing a total of 36.
